Melbourne's train, tram and bus operators announced plans to establish Metlink, a 'one stop shop' for integrated, passenger-friendly information.
2004
14 April
Yarra Trams assumes responsibility for operating Melbourne’s tram network in partnership with the State of Victoria.
July
W class trams returned to service on routes 78 and 79 along Church and Chapel Streets.
17 October
Routes 8 and 22 merge and become route 8, running from Toorak to Moreland, travelling via Lygon Street.
Routes 16 and 69 merge and become route 16, running from Kew to Melbourne University via St Kilda.

Camberwell Depot celebrates 75th anniversary.

4 January
Docklands Drive tram extension opened.
March
Yarra Trams opens new Fleet Operations Centre in South Melbourne.
May
The west end of Flinders Street closes to trams to allow for the removal of the Flinders Street overpass and construction of an intersection and platform stops at Flinders and King Streets.
25 July
Vermont South Tram Extension (Knox Transit Link) opens, extending route 75 along Burwood Highway from Blackburn Road to the Vermont South Shopping Centre (over Springvale Road).
7 August
Trams return to William Street on Sundays (route 55).
27 October
Platform stop opens at Collins and Elizabeth Streets in the City.
November
The west end of Flinders Street re-opens to trams, with the Flinders Street overpass removed and a new intersection at Flinders and King Streets. Platform stops open in Flinders Street at Spencer, King and Market Streets.
2006
5 February
Platform stop opens in Collins Street between Exhibition and Russell Streets, City.
March
Tram services provided to hundreds of thousands of people for the Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games.
