On 29 August 1999 the newly franchised tram and train business units of the former Public Transport Corporation commenced operations under private ownership.
The Yarra Trams franchise was acquired by MetroLink Victoria Pty Ltd, a joint venture partnership between the major Australian company Transfield Services and the leading European transport operator, Transdev.
Transfield has extensive experience in rail and track services, from operations and maintenance to the construction and operation of rail links. The company also has a history of partnering governments, both in Australia and overseas, and in making the successful transition of contracts to the private sector.
Transdev is one of Europe's leading private tram operators and one of France's largest public transport operators. The company specialises in the development and operation of mass transit systems including bus, underground, light rail and modern tramway networks. Transdev currently operates nine tram networks globally.
On 18 April 2004 Yarra Trams assumed responsibility for operating the entire Melbourne tram network.
Today the company consists of eight depots, 27 routes, 1800 staff and a fleet of nearly 500 trams. In 2005/2006 more than 150 million passenger trips were undertaken by tram in Melbourne.
Yarra Trams has managed the introduction of low-floor trams and the construction of platform stops to improve accessibility. We have refurbished the older vehicles to maximise passenger comfort and safety.
By providing modern vehicles and efficient services we have repositioned tram travel as an appealing mode of transport for the whole community.
