Des’s career in passenger rail (trams and trains) dates back approximately 40 years. During a period of significant industry restructuring and rationalisation Des has managed and strategically led the human resource function of what was once the public transport industry through to the corporatisation, privatisation, integration and reunification of the two tramway network workforces following the success of the MR2 refranchising in 2004, MR3 Refranchising Process of 2009 to the now established Yarra Trams.

Des has demonstrated an ability to strategically and commercially manage key stakeholder relationships and represent the best interests of both the organisation and the Government.

Des has successfully developed and implemented human resource strategies, processes, frameworks, systems and policies and has always ensured the objectives were aligned to the overall business plan of the organisation. He has a proven track record of embedding continuous improvement in organisations and developed initiatives to support management in engaging the workforce in bringing about successful change.
