The construction of a new accessible platform stop at Stop 136 on Route 96 (Alfred Square) in June will mark the 330th stop which has been upgraded by Yarra Trams since 1999.
Yarra Trams has worked closely with the Department of Transport to introduce more platform stops to the network. The number of stops, which provide improved passenger amenities and enhanced access for passengers with specific needs, has grown from 40 in 2004 to more than 300 today. The rate of increase amounts to a new stop being installed every eight days since then.
Before the end of 2011, platform stops will be opened in Swanston Street, St Kilda Esplanade and High Street, Northcote. Stops are planned for the future in Parkville, Carlton and Richmond.
The arrival of 50 new low floor trams from late 2012 will further enhance low floor tram services on more routes.
