As part of the modernisation of Melbourne's tram network, Yarra Trams will be renewing the tram overhead cables at the intersection of Spencer and Bourke Sts (Melway ref: 1A - A5 ). These works need to be conducted prior to the renewal of tram tracks in Spencer St over the Easter/ANZAC Day long weekend (21 to 27 April).
The overhead power works will be carried out in the evenings and on weekends to minimise inconvenience to passengers and motorists as shown below: • Monday 4 to Thursday 7 April - each night from 10:00pm to 4:30am • Sunday 10 April from 2:00am to 12:00pm (midday) • Monday 11 to Thursday 14 April - each night from 10:00pm to 4:30am
Associated noise from machinery and work crews will be unavoidable but Yarra Trams will do all it can to keep this to a minimum. We anticipate the noise to be similar to that of your regular garbage collection.
During the works the road and intersection will be partially closed to traffic and detours will be in place. Traffic controllers will be on duty around the work area to assist motorists and pedestrians. The below table outlines road closures during the works:
Spencer Street
Northbound - one lane open for through traffic. No right turn into Bourke Street. Southbound - all lanes closed to traffic. Detours via Lonsdale Street and King Street.
Bourke Street
Full closure between King and Spencer Streets. Westbound traffic detoured via King St into either Lt Collins or Lt Bourke Streets.
The following tram service changes will be in place at these times for Routes 75, 86 and 96:
Route 75 trams will not service Spencer St and will continue via Flinders St across Spencer St to terminate at Stop D3 Bourke St and Harbour Esp.
Route 86 trams will divert via La Trobe St and will not service Bourke St or Spencer St.
Route 96 trams will not operate in Bourke St or in Spencer St between Bourke and Flinders Sts. Route 96 trams from East Brunswick will divert via Spring St and Flinders St to terminate at Stop 1 Spencer and Flinders Sts, instead of travelling via Bourke and Spencer Sts. To connect with trams to St Kilda please walk to Stop 124 in Spencer St. Route 96 trams from St Kilda will terminate at Stop 124 Batman Park. To connect with Route 96 trams to East Brunswick please walk to Stop 1 in Flinders St.
