On 9 July 2011, work will begin on tram track renewal and the construction of accessible platform stops on High Street, Westgarth. This is the first stage of the Route 86 - High Street and Plenty Road - tram track and road environment improvement works.
The project will enhance accessibility to Melbourne's tram network and make it safer to get on and off Route 86 trams by segregating passengers and traffic. This is the first time this section of the tram tracks has been renewed since 1955.
TRAM SERVICE CHANGES High Street will be closed between Clarke and Urquhart Streets during the works. The following tram service changes will be in place:
Route 86 trams will not operate along High Street during tram track renewal and the construction of accessible tram stops.
A shuttle tram (Route 00 City - Clifton Hill) will operate between the intersection of Bourke and Spencer Streets and Clifton Hill Interchange via Bourke Street and Smith Street (the normal Route 86 route). Customers for Smith Street, Gertrude Street or Clifton Hill should catch this shuttle tram.
Route 86 is operating between Waterfront City Docklands and Bundoora RMIT via La Trobe Street, Victoria Parade, Brunswick Street, St Georges Road, Miller Street and Plenty Road in both directions.
Customers travelling from the City to Northcote and beyond should catch a tram on Routes 86 or 112 and transfer in St Georges Road at Westbourne Grove to a tram replacement bus servicing High Street, Thornbury and Northcote. Tram passengers travelling from Bundoora to High Street, Northcote and Thornbury should transfer to the tram replacement bus at Miller Street.
OTHER PUBLIC TRANSPORT OPTIONS Some customers who live or work around High Street or Westgarth Street should consider catching an Epping or Hustbridge line train during the works.
Bus routes 246, 250 and 251 also service this area and may be a convenient option for some customers. Please note: These bus routes travelling towards Bundoora will travel via Heidelberg Road, Jeffrey Street and Victoria Road on Saturday 9 and Sunday 10 July when the intersection of Westgarth Street will be closed.
