Minding the gap

A trial on Route 96 trams is tackling a common accessibility issue.

The differing dimensions of mobility devices, designs of trams and accessible stops is causing issues for some passengers as their mobility devices have trouble negotiating a tricky gap between the platform and tram.

Yarra Trams worked with Public Transport Victoria to install a trial 'gap eliminator' (the black and white strip seen above) on two trams running on Route 96 and invited a group of special needs passengers to trial it. The results have been positive, with each person on the trial that the small strip greatly improved their access when entering or exiting the vehicle.
