Yarra Trams is saddened to hear that one of our most popular drivers has passed away after a short illness.
Lenny Bates began driving trams in 1955 and quickly became one of Melbourne's best known 'trammies' with his friendly manner and distinctive cap.
Over the years he received many compliments for his informative announcements and became a familiar face to passengers on Routes 48 and 109.
Last week Lenny's workmates gathered at Kew Depot to say farewell to him and make a special presentation. His colleagues spoke of the great affection that the travelling public had for Lenny.
From all of us at Yarra Trams our thoughts are with Lenny's family and friends at this time.
