Moonee Ponds Junction tram stop upgrade

4 January, 2016

As part of the modernisation of Melbourne's tram network, Yarra Trams and Public Transport Victoria (PTV) are constructing a pair of accessible platform stops and repairing and renewing tram tracks at Moonee Ponds Junction. These works will create a new and improved public transport hub with enhanced efficiency and amenity.

This will include:

  • The creation of an intermodal interchange for both buses and trams, which provides one tram stop for Routes 82 and 59.
  • The reconfiguration of the junction, making it safer and easier to access for tram passengers.
  • Construction of a pair of raised platform stops to service both Routes 82 and 59 providing improved passenger facilities such as shelter, seating and real-time passenger information.
  • 800 metres of a new semi-resilient track that requires less time, resources and delays to replace in the future and providing tram passengers with a smoother, quieter journey

Timings

Preliminary work will take place from Monday, 4 January 2016 to Friday, 15 January 2016. This work will prepare the site for the major construction period and involves pre-welding of the rail.

Major work will commence at 12:01am Saturday, 16 January 2016 and continue until 5:00am Thursday, 28 January 2016.

Service changes for tram passengers

Route 82 & 59 trams will be affected during the tram upgrade work. Buses will be replacing tram services for part of the journey. For details, refer to signage on the network or on-board brochures.

Service changes apply to Route 59 & 82  trams from Saturday, 16 January 2016 to Wednesday, 27 January 2016.

Consultation

Community consultation with businesses, residents and the general community took place in June and July 2015. There was a high level of support for the project. Those in favour were pleased with the improved safety, transfers between tram stops and access to the bus interchange.

Changes to the bus interchange will be delivered as a second stage. Further consultation before it is completed will be carried out prior to delivery. PTV and the City Of Moonee Valley will continue to provide more information about future consultation in the development of the junction.
