Tram Network Upgrade - West Preston substation

28 October, 2016

Public Transport Victoria (PTV) and Yarra Trams are building a new tram power substation on Regent Street in J.S. Grey Reserve, West Preston.

In late-September 2016 the substation building was delivered to the site. During the past month underground cables have been installed to feed the power supply from the new substation into the tram network.

What is planned?

Underground cabling and electrical works will continue to take place over the next few months. The majority of this work will be conducted inside the substation building.

Timing

  • These works will be predominantly carried out each weekday between 7:00am-5:30pm, however some occasional work may need to be undertaken on Saturdays between 8:00am-2:00pm.

Architectural treatment

  • The substation itself is a pre-fabricated, containerised structure. It is important to note, the current building treatment is not the finished structure. Once the substation is commissioned in early-2017, an architectural treatment will be implemented.
  • We have considered feedback about the design of the substation's appearance from both the local community and the City of Darebin. A perimeter fence around the substation made from neutral/ natural materials has been selected. The fence will include gaps between the material to allow an open aspect and will be the height of approximately 2.4m (Sheffield Street side) and approximately 3.2m (Regent Street side).
  • Upon completion of construction, remediation of the area and landscaping will be carried out in conjunction. The rose garden will be relocated further along Regent Street towards Sheffield Street due to availability of space and to allow for optimal sunlight exposure.

Minimising impacts on the local community

  • During this time residents and traders can expect to hear some construction-related noise. Our workers will be mindful of keeping noise to a minimum and respecting the needs of the local community.

Providing a tram network for the future

  • Upgrading tram power is an important part of modernising Melbourne's tram network. This substation at West Preston will provide power to nearby Route 11. Upgrades to substations will deliver a more reliable power supply to support high capacity trams as they are introduced across the network.

Keeping the local community informed

  • PTV and Yarra Trams are committed to keeping the local community informed of construction activity and progress. We thank you for your patience and understanding during this important upgrade work.
