Tram Network Upgrade - West Preston substation

17 February, 2017

Public Transport Victoria (PTV) and Yarra Trams are building a new tram power substation on Regent Street in J.S. Grey Reserve, West Preston.

During the past couple of months underground cabling and electrical works have taken place in and around the substation building.

What is planned?

Underground cabling works will be completed on Gilbert Road between the kerb and adjacent tram track. This work will involve reinstatement of asphalt on the carriageway and consists of two main activities:

  • Removal of temporary reinstatement with a small excavator and tip truck
  • Permanent asphalt reinstatement by hand and the use of vibrating compactor

Timing

  • These works are due to occur from Thursday 16 March to Friday 17 March, 2017 between 10:00pm and 5:00am.
  • Further testing and commissioning will be completed by the end of February and will be carried out each weekday between 7:00am-5:30pm, however some occasional work may need to be undertaken on Saturdays between 8:00am-2:00pm.

Architectural treatment

  • The architectural treatment works have commenced and expected to be completed in March 2017.

  • Remediation of the area and landscaping will be carried out in conjunction with these works. The rose garden will now be relocated to the existing garden beds on the corner of Gilbert Road and Regent Street due to availability of space and to allow for optimal sunlight exposure.

J.S Grey Reserve

We have been working with the City of Darebin to investigate an additional contribution to the reserve as part of this project. The following items have been proposed by the City of Darebin. Please let us know what you think. Delivery for items nominated below is proposed over the coming 6-8 months.

  • 10 additional established trees (City of Darebin to confirm species and location).

  • Heightening of the playspace fence immediately behind the basketball ring.

  • Replacement of the existing activity tower with a newer model (the existing play equipment will be removed).

Minimising impacts on the local community

  • During this time residents and traders can expect to hear some construction-related noise. Our workers will be mindful of keeping noise to a minimum and respecting the needs of the local community.

Providing a tram network for the future

  • Upgrading tram power is an important part of modernising Melbourne's tram network. This substation at West Preston will provide power to nearby Route 11. Upgrades to substations will deliver a more reliable power supply to support high capacity trams as they are introduced across the network.

Keeping the local community informed

  • PTV and Yarra Trams are committed to keeping the local community informed of construction activity and progress. We thank you for your patience and understanding during this important upgrade work.
