Location of major tram works & road closures:

As per the schedules below, the preliminary works to prepare the site for construction will commence on Monday 20 May 2013. The major works will take place over the Queen's Birthday long weekend, between approximately 10pm Friday 7 June and 5am Thursday 13 June 2013.

The renewal of overhead infrastructure and more than 800 metres of double track will improve safety for everyone, as well as delivering a better road surface for motorists and cyclists, a smoother ride for tram passengers and less tram noise associated with potholes and broken rails.

Road closures during the major works will make it necessary for all traffic to detour around the site. All roads will open to traffic and trams will resume normal service on Thursday 13 June 2013.

Location:
Intersection of Wattletree Rd and Dandenong Rd in Armadale

Reason for service changes:
As part of the modernisation of Melbourne's tram network, Yarra Trams will be renewing the overhead tram cables and tracks at Wattletree Rd and Dandenong Rd.

Service Changes:
Route 5 trams will operate as Route 5a between Stop 1 Melbourne University and Stop 38 Dandenong and Orrong Roads. Trams will be replaced by buses between Stop 38 Dandenong and Orrong Roads and the Malvern Terminus.

Route 64 trams will operate as Route 64a in two sections between:
   - Stop 1 Melbourne University and Stop 38 Dandenong & Orrong Roads 
   - Stop 48 Hawthorn & Dandenong Roads and Stop 68 East Brighton Terminus.

Tram replacement buses will connect the two sections stopping at temporary kerbside stops.

During the works tram services will operate to their normal frequency, however they may not arrive at the scheduled time. Yarra Trams suggests that you allow extra time for your journey.

Service Changes (effective 22 May 2013):

Route 55 - Stop 3 Flinders Lane & William Street (for trams heading to Domain Interchange) will close permanently.

Passengers can catch trams from Stop 4 Collins & William Streets or Stop 2 Market Street & Flinders Lane.

Route 75 & 86 - Stop 121 Bourke & Spencer Streets (for trams heading to Vermont South and Bundoora RMIT) will close permanently.

Passengers can catch trams from Stop 122 Southern Cross Station (Route 75) or Stop 1 Spencer & Bourke Streets (Route 86).

The breaking of concrete and the removal of the old tracks is the first stage of the project. You can see the progress made so far in the images below:

Service Changes:
Routes 19, 57 & 59 will operate as 19a, 57a & 59a and terminate at Stop 5 Elizabeth Street & La Trobe Street.

Passengers wishing to travel between La Trobe Street and Flinders Street should consider:
   -Trams along the Swanston Street corridor
   -216, 219 or 220 bus services along Queen Street
   -City Loop trains from Melbourne Central Station

The following tram stops will be closed during the works:
   -Stop 4 Lonsdale and Elizabeth Streets
   -Stop 3 Bourke and Elizabeth Streets
   -Stop 2 Collins and Elizabeth Streets
   -Stop 1 Flinders and Elizabeth Streets

Pedestrians and Traffic:
All footpaths will remain open during the works zone although some pedestrian crossings will be closed for safety reasons. Traffic controllers will be on site to assist pedestrians and motorists.

Elizabeth Street will be closed to traffic between Little Lonsdale Street and Little Bourke Street and also between Collins Street and Flinders Street. Intersections at cross streets within these areas will be closed. Anyone requiring access to these areas are asked to speak to traffic controllers on site. This includes: Greenco Carpark, Wilson Carpark, Melbourne Central SmartPark, St Francis Church and Myer parcel pick-up.

Due to damaged overhead wires near the intersection of Collins & William Street, Route 48 is diverting via Flinders Street. Route 109 & 112 is diverting via La Trobe Street and Route 55 is diverting via Elizabeth Street.

4.58pm
There is a limited Route 55 shuttle between Flinders & Market St and Domain Interchange. Passengers can catch a Route 55 service towards West Coburg from Elizabeth Street.

Diversions for Routes 48, 109 & 112 are in place for trams in both directions.

5.05pm
Some Route 109 & 112 trams will operate between Elizabeth St & Flinders St and Box Hill  & West Preston. Most 109 & 112 trams will operate via La Trobe St.

5.12pm
Route 48, 109 & 112 trams are returning to Collins Street. Route 55 is still diverting via Elizabeth Street.

5.32pm
Due to an abandoned car at Exhibition St & La Trobe St, Route 30 trams are operating between Docklands & Elizabeth Street.

5.38pm
Route 55 trams have resumed normal service on William Street.

5.42pm
The abandoned car on La Trobe Street has been moved by police and services will resume.

6.47pm
While some services on previously affected routes may be delayed, we are working to restore the timetable and all services are operating on their normal routes.

Trams will operate as Route 70a between Flinders Street and Stop 7C MCG/Hisense Arena and Stop 7D AAMI Park.

The match commences at 5.30pm.

Trams will operate as Route 70a between Flinders Street and Stop 7C MCG/Hisense Arena and Stop 7D AAMI Park.

The match commences at 7.40pm.

Due to the works to renew overhead cables at Normanby Rd & Smith Street, Caulfield Route 3 trams will operate Route 3a between Stop 1 Melbourne University and Stop 53 Caulfield Park (not operating via St Kilda Beach).

Trams will be replaced by buses between Stop 53 Caulfield Park and Stop 64 East Malvern terminus.

Tram replacement buses will detour around the works zone via Waverley Road, Burke Road, John Monash Drive, Queens Avenue, Normanby Road and Balaclava Road to connect with trams at Stop 53 Caulfield Park.

The following tram stops will not be serviced by trams or tram replacement buses:

• Stop 54 to East Malvern terminus - use temporary bus stop in Kambrook Rd
• Stop 55 Normanby Rd - use temporary bus stop in Kambrook Rd
• Stop 56 Caulfield Racecourse - use temporary bus stop in Station St
• Stop 57 Caulfield Station - use temporary bus stop in Normanby Rd
• Stop 58 Derby Rd - use temporary bus stop in Normanby Rd
• Stop 59 Waverley Rd - use Stop 60 Burke Rd & Waverley Rd

During the works tram services will operate to their normal frequency, however they may not arrive at the scheduled time.

Yarra Trams suggests that you allow extra time for your journey.

At various times the march is expected to disrupt tram services on Swanston Street, La Trobe Street and Elizabeth Street. It is scheduled to commence at approximately 10am and conclude around 12pm.

The march is now clear of all tram tracks. There are no service changes in place in the CBD.

11.14am

The disruption to trams on Elizabeth Street has now cleared.

10.57am

Swanston Street services are now resuming normal running, but there are some disruptions to Elizabeth Street trams as the march crosses tracks.

10.44am

Route 1 and 8 trams from East Coburg/Moreland are terminating at Stop 4 - Swanston/Queensberry Street.

10.08am

Route 3, 5, 6, 16, 64, 67 and 72 trams towards Melbourne University will terminate at Stop 8 - Melbourne Central Station/Swanston Street.

9.36am

Route 1 trams are operating a shuttle service between Stop 32 - South Melbourne Beach terminus and Stop 14 - Arts Precinct.

This means that if you tram normally operates every seven minutes it will continue to do so, however times may differ slightly from the normal Saturday timetable.

Routes 24 and 30 will not operate.

Extra trams will operate to the Dawn Service at the Shrine, the Collingwood vs Essendon match at the MCG and the Melbourne Storm vs New Zealand Warriors match at AAMI Park.

Tram services will be in place for Route 48 trams on Thursday 25 April due to works on the Collins Street Extension.

Anzac Day March

Swanston Street/St Kilda Road corridor (7.30am to 1pm)

Trams will operate as Routes 1a, 3a, 5a, 6a, 8a, 16a, 64a, 67a and 72a.

Routes 1a and 8a from the north will terminate at Stop 8 Melbourne Central.

Route 1a from South Melbourne Beach will terminate in Southbank Boulevard at St Kilda Road.

Routes 5a, 6a, 8a, 16a and 72a from the south will divert at Domain Interchange via Park St, Kings Way and Sturt St along Route 55 to terminate at Southbank Blvd and St Kilda Rd.

Trams on Routes 3a, 64a and 67a from the south will divert at Domain Interchange via Park St, Kings Way, William St along Route 55 to terminate at Stop 7 Franklin St and William St.

Flinders Street corridor (7.30am to 1pm)

Trams will operate as Route 70a and 75a between Wattle Park and Vermont South and Stop 6 Russell/Flinders Sts.

Shuttle trams will operate between:

• Waterfront City Docklands & Stop 4 Elizabeth/Flinders Sts
• La Trobe/Spencer Sts & Stop 4 Elizabeth/Flinders Sts

Collins Street corridor (7am to 1pm)

Trams will operate as Route 48a between North Balwyn & Stop 7 101 Collins St. Trams on Route 109 and 112 will divert via La Trobe St between Spencer St & St Vincent's Plaza.

Shuttle trams will operate between:

• Stop D15 Batman's Hill & Stop 5 Elizabeth/Collins Sts
• St Vincents Plaza & Stop 7 101 Collins St.
  

City Circle (first tram to 1pm)

Trams will operate between Stop 4 Elizabeth/Flinders Sts & Stop 6 La Trobe/Swanston Sts & Docklands via Harbour Esp.

Due to these changes, trams will operate to the normal service frequency, however they may not arrive at the scheduled time. Yarra Trams suggests that you allow extra time for your journey.

Trams will operate as Route 70a between Flinders Street and Stop 7C MCG/Hisense Arena and Stop 7D AAMI Park.

The match commences at 7.00pm.

The works will extend tram tracks in Collins Street west to Bourke Street, facilitating future network development in the area. When the works are completed trams will continue to terminate at Stop D17 Merchant/Collins Street (Victoria Harbour).

Routes 11, 31 and 48 will operate as Routes 11a, 31a and 48a and terminate two stops before Victoria Harbour at Stop D15 Batman's Hill/Collins Street. Stop D15 is approximately 400 metres (five minutes walk) from the Victoria Harbour terminus.

During the works trams will operate to the normal service frequency, however they may not arrive at the scheduled time. Yarra Trams suggest that you allow extra time for your journey.

Collins Street trams will also be disrupted for the Anzac Day March on Thursday 25 April.

On Thursday 25 April regular trams are running at a Saturday frequency, with works affecting trams on Route 48 in Collins Street.

Etihad Stadium

Saturday 27 April at 7.40pm - Western Bulldogs vs Geelong

Extra trams will operate to Stop D1 Etihad Stadium via both Bourke Street and La Trobe Street.

Tram replacement buses will detour around the festival connecting with trams at Stop 67 Gardiner and Glenferrie Rds.

To Kew, Cotham Rd via Glenferrie Rd, Burwood Rd, Power Rd, Barkers Rd and Glenferrie Rd.

To Melbourne University via Glenferrie Rd, Bakers Rd, Auburn Rd, Burwood Rd and
Glenferrie Rd.

Due to the diversion the following tram stop changes will occur:

• Stop 67 - Gardiner and Glenferrie Rds (To Kew) - use tram replacement bus
• Stop 73 (To Kew, Cotham Rd) - use temporary stop in Burwood Rd
• Stop 73 (To University) - use temporary stop in Glenferrie Rd, south of Burwood Rd
• Stop 74 - Glenferrie Station - use Stop 73
• Stop 75 - Liddiard St - use Stop 73 or 77
• Stop 76 - Johnson St - use Stop 77
• Stop 77 - Barkers Rd (To Kew, Cotham Rd) - use temporary stop in Glenferrie Rd, north of Bakers Rd
• Stop 80 Kew, Cotham Rd - use temporary kerbside stop near existing stop
