During the Melbourne Cup weekend Metro Trains will be upgrading and performing maintenance on the Alamein line from approximately 8.30pm Friday 2 November to 5am Tuesday 6 November 2012.
As part of the modernisation of Melbourne's tram network, Yarra Trams will also be renewing the tram tracks in Riversdale Road between Station Street and Waterloo Street, Camberwell, from approximately 12am Saturday 3 November to 5am Monday 5 November 2012.
The works will improve safety for everyone, as well as delivering a better road surface for motorists and cyclists, a smoother ride for tram passengers, and less noise associated with potholes and broken rails.
The tram track renewal will occur in two distinct phases:
Pre-welding and preparation of lengths of rail will be done in a 100m section on the norther side of Riversdale Road between Symonds Street and Redfern Road.
Carrying out this preliminary work substantially reduces the amount of time that Riversdale Road will need to be closed to traffic for the major works.
The major works to renew 370m of double track in Riversdale Road between Station and Waterloo Streets will be carried out 24 hours a day and take two days to complete.
Riversdale Road will be closed to all traffic between Station Street and Waterloo Street, and around the railway level crossing in Riversdale Road for the duration of the works. Traffic will be diverted around the works zone.
The works zone will be fenced off for safety but footpaths on both sides of Riversdale Road will remain open to allow pedestrian access to all businesses.
Pedestrians and cyclists will not be able to cross Riversdale Road where the works are taking place.
Access to the Boorondara Recycling and Waste Centre will not be possible during these works.
Route 70 trams will operate as Route 70a between Waterfront City Docklands and Stop 39 Camberwell Tram Depot.
Tram replacement buses will operate between Stop 39 Camberwell Tram Depot and the Wattle Park terminus.
Tram replacement buses will detour around the works zone operating via Riversdale Road, Camberwell Road, Trafalgar Road, Prospect Hill Road, Wattle Valley Road and Riversdale Road, in both directions.
Tram replacement buses will use existing tram stops 51 to 60, however tram stops 40 to 50 and 61 will be closed and replaced with the following temporary tram replacement bus stops:
Due to these changes, trams and tram replacement buses will operate to the normal tram frequency, however they may not arrive at the scheduled time due to traffic congestion associated with the works.
Yarra Trams suggests that you allow extra time for your journey.
We thank you for your patience and regret any inconvenience caused by these improvement works which are essential to the safe and efficient operation of the tram and train network.
Alamein line
For customers travelling to and from the city, buses will replace trains between Camberwell and Alamein from 8.00pm on Friday 2 November until last service on Monday 5 November.
While these works take place the level crossing at Riversdale Road will be closed to vehicles and pedestrians, with an alternative route marked out by signage and traffic controllers. For full traffic plans please visit vicroads.vic.gov.au
