For our new users

Melbourne is a great city to experience any time of the year and the extensive public transport system makes it easy to for you to discover the best that Melbourne has to offer.

If you are new to the tram system download a user guide containing important information about the Yarra Trams network, ticketing and tram frequency.

For more information on using Melbourne's trains, trams and buses visit ptv.vic.gov.au. Additional information about accessibility on trams is also available.

Melbourne has moved to a new ticketing system called myki. Tickets are no longer sold on trams, so passengers should purchase and top up a myki before travelling.

Tourists may also consider purchasing the myki Visitor Pack.

How to use myki

Melbourne's new ticket system myki is a reusable smart card that can store either a myki pass (travel days) or myki money (dollar value) and these are used to pay for your journey.

Before you travel you need to purchase or top up a myki. These are available at selected retail outlets, at railway stations and on-board buses. You need to have a positive myki balance to be able to 'touch on' a tram.

There is no need to touch off on a tram unless your trip is entirely within Zone 2.

For more information on myki visit ptv.vic.gov.au

Small animals are permitted on-board if they are in a suitable container.
